They say, to err is to human. Errors and mistakes are part of our lives. These mistakes meander our lives to failures. But then, failures are the stepping stones to success. It might take long but it eventually takes one to the path of success.

However, there are some mistakes that can be and should be avoided if one wants a lucrative career for oneself.

A report by Travis Bradberry has enlisted some of the basic mistakes that end up ruining one’s career.

The author writes that in a recent survey by VitalSmarts it was revealed that 83% of people had seen someone make a blunder that had catastrophic results for their career, reputation, or business, and 69% admitted that they themselves had done something that had damaged their careers.

Some of their mistakes had cost them a raise, a promotion or even a job. Their reputation was put at stake and their working relationship was also hampered.

Listed below are some of the little things that might seem small in an apparent vision. But later, they add up to be something huge that had an enormous effect on the career of an individual.

Over-promising and under-delivering

Sometimes, we tend to promise a lot to our colleagues and superiors especially when one is honest and hardworking and have faith in oneself.

But there’s no point in creating additional pressure that can make you look bad and embarrass oneself in front of those who matter. It is important for one to have reality checks about one’s capabilities.

However, there is no need to underestimate oneself; all one needs is to have realistic expectations about oneself.

Complacency

Sitting in ivory castles thinking that nothing is going to change and thinking that the same skill set can take them places, is the biggest mistake that one can commit. If one dreams of making it big, it is very important that s/he remains adaptive to changes and picks up the new set of skills to move on forward.

Fear of change

This is the evil twin of complacency, where one is not ready to accept the changes that have been disrupting the market. It is essential that instead of empty criticisms, one takes up the challenge of learning new things without fearing change.

Having an inflatable ego

The fruit of success is great. But the sensible employee does not let success get to herself. She knows that success is not to stay if not taken care of. Having a high bloated ego, with no humility, leads one nowhere.

Negativity

Mood swings are common to us all. We all have our bad and good days. But this does not mean that the person would be spewing that negativity to other employees in the room. This does not have a good impact on the workforce, neither does it help the person get up the ladder of corporate success.

Low emotional EQ

Emotional outbursts, belittling others, shutting co-workers down when they speak, low self-awareness, and just generally being difficult are several examples of how low emotional intelligence can take a toll on their work.

Flattering the boss

Even though flattering one’s boss might give some temporary success, this can never be responsible for full-time successful careers. Flattery is a sign of weakness and when found out can lead to several problems in the career.

Playing politics

In a workplace, there will be people who one might dislike or find it difficult to work with. However, this surely does not give anyone the leverage to use dirty politics and schemes to achieve one’s purpose. Plotting and scheming eventually leads to downfall.

Seemingly small, these things if taken care of can help one better themselves in life and flourish in their career.
