YouTube Plans Original Programming In India, Japan And Other Markets


Alphabet Inc’s YouTube is creating a scripted series and the other original programming for the international markets those include Germany, Mexico, Japan India and France and try to draw new customers for its paid subscription service, aforesaid a senior executive the previous day. Youtube

The programming will be in the form of numerous genres those include reality series, music documentaries, scripted series and the talk shows, YouTube’s Global Head of original programming, Susanne Daniels said in an interview. She also added, The programs would be produced in local languages and will be subtitled and dubbed for other markets.

Some of the programs will appear on YouTube Premium, the monthly subscription service which is formerly called as YouTube Red. One can check for the other contents on YouTube’s free service with the advertisements. “We are targeting markets where we believe we have a tremendous upside in potential subscribers,” Daniels said.

YouTube has released a handful of original shows in India and South Korea till date. The Indian show is a talk show in Hindi and is all about cricket. The show called “UnCricket” has performed beyond the expectations, said Daniels.  Daniels also said “a reality show starring South Korean pop band Big Bang has boosted subscriptions, and that 50 percent of the new customers came from outside of Korea”.

Added to that, Susanne Daniel also said, “Additional details about the international slate will be released in the upcoming weeks”.  YouTube is also a huge competitor of the other companies those include Inc. and Netflix Inc. those are investing in the local language programming for the online audiences around the globe.


The first and foremost original show from YouTube was debuted on its premium service in the year 2016, starting with the series from some of the platform’s most popular video creators. It also added that the programming from Hollywood stars also released a batch of children’s shows including Emmy-winning “Fruit Ninja Frenzy Force.”

When questioned about the current plans for more original programming for children, Daniels said, “There are no current plans for more original children’s programming”. The YouTube Kids app serves that younger audience, she said, and the company does not believe children’s content will drive subscriptions to YouTube Premium at this time.
