Instagram’s co-founders to step down from company

The co-founders of the photo-sharing application Instagram, Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger have resigned and plan to leave the company in the upcoming weeks thereby adding to the challenges facing the Instagram’s parent company, Facebook.

The chief executive of Instagram Mr. Systrom and the chief technical officer Mr. Krieger notified Instagram’s leadership team and the Facebook on Monday of their decision of leaving, said people with the direct knowledge of the matter who have spoke on the conditions of anonymity since they were not authorized for discussing the matter in public.

Mr. Krieger and Mr. Systrom did not give any reason for their resignation but they said that they have planned to take time off after leaving Instagram. Mr. Krieger who is 32 years ols and Mr. Systrom a 34 year old guy know each other very well since 2010 when they had met and transformed a software project which was built by Mr. Systrom into what eventually became Instagram that is now has more that billion users.

Mr. Systrom and Mr. Kreiger on Monday said on Monday,  “ready for our next chapter,” and also hinted that they would create something new. “We’re planning on taking some time off to explore our curiosity and creativity again,” Mr. Systrom said. “Building new things requires that we step back, understand what inspires us and match that with what the world needs; that’s what we plan to do.

Mark Zuckerberg, the chief executive of Facebook, even praised the founders of Instagram in his statement and also said that he has wished them “all the best and I’m looking forward to seeing what they build next.

Facebook has lost other founders of businesses it has acquired. In April, Jan Koum, a Facebook board member and a founder of WhatsApp, the messaging app that the social network purchased in 2014, said he was leaving. Mr. Koum had grown increasingly concerned about Facebook’s position on user data in recent years, people with knowledge of the situation said at the time. In Silicon Valley, reaction to the Instagram founders’ resignation was swift.
