It is a trillion dollar company

Amazon has passed a $1 trillion in the market value. It is the second American firm after apple. It’s a remarkable number for a 24-year-old company. Here’s how Amazon have achieved this.

Cadabra to Amazon

Amazon only sold books on its debut in 1995. It’s boss, Jeff Bezos, wanted to name the company “Cadabra” but was advised to not to do so because it sounded too similar to “Cadaver”. He finally picked “Amazon” because he liked that the company would be named after the largest river in the world. Amazon in the early days had a bell that would ring every time a purchase was made. They had to dump it after the purchases started picking up.

Small wonder

Amazon started out of the Bezos’ garage and the servers used required so much power that Bezos and his wife couldn’t run a hair dryer or a vacuum in the house without blowing a fuse.

The book that saved Amazon

Amazon was saved by a book named lichens from going bankrupt. The requirement of the book distributors  was the order of ten book each time and Amazon  did not have much finds then and the team found the solution on this. Albeit the distributors required that Amazon order 10 books but the company did not receive that money. Hence they would just order one book according to their needs and the nine copies of the obscure lichen book those were always out of stock.

Amazon had a workaholic boss

The boss of Amazon, Jeff Bezos at some point expected its employees to work nearly 60 hours per week. The main idea of the work life balance did not exist then. In the year 2015, the New York Times did publish an article which starred about the employees of Amazon and the work culture at Amazon. Bob Olson, a former Amazon Books Marketing employee, said then that “nearly every person I worked with, I saw cry at their desk.”

The question mark scare

The customers those were not satisfied would email Jeff Bezon and then he would forward the message it to the respective person with a dreaded addition: “?”. When the employees get a Bezos question mart email, it would be a ticking bomb and they would just get few hours to solve it.

The kindle story

The  original code name for the kindle was “Fiona”. The Amazon’s kindle got its name from the book named “The Diamond Age” by Neal Stephenson, a novel about an engineer who steals a rare interactive textbook to give to his knowledge-hungry daughter, Fiona.

Anger issues

Bezon was well known for his anger and his sarcastic responses for the employees whenever he wasn’t happy with their reports. It is also believed that he hired the leadership coach for trying to keep his hash evaluations check.
