It seems that the noise pollution outside has led the youth within the age range 12 to 35 has adopted music via headphones. The medium to beat noise pollution is creating the same problem that might result in deafness in as many as 110 crore persons.

As per the report from WHO, listening to loud music falls in the self-inflicted noise. It released a study with real-time data showing the extreme effects of self-imposed noise pollution. An estimated 1.1 billion people, aged between 12 and 35, are risking hearing impairment every day by listening to loud music worldwide.

The safest threshold is marked at 85 dB for 8 hours. If the sound level is at 100 dB then it should span for 15 minutes daily. Anymore dose of loud music above this level can damage the inner ear. A normal conversation ranges up to 60 dB.

As per the report, 50% of younger adults and teenagers are relentlessly exposed to harmful levels via their audio devices. 40% are at potential risk as they attend parties, go clubbing or attend a concert.

A motorcycle produces sound with noise level ranging up to 95 dB. Using headphone ranges noise level up to 105 dB. It is safe to listen for 4 minutes only. A club or a bar produces a sound level of more than 110 dB. Firecrackers produce sound ranging up to 150 dB.

WHO Director, Department for Management of Non-communicable Diseases, Disability, Violence and Injury Prevention, said, “As they go about their daily lives doing what they enjoy, more and more young people are placing themselves at risk of hearing loss.”

He added, “They should be aware that once you lose your hearing, it won’t come back. Taking simple preventive actions will allow people to continue to enjoy themselves without putting their hearing at risk.”
