Learn About Leadership from Your Failed Relationships

Maybe your significant other is mad at you as you were not paying attention to what they are saying as you were busy with work on your laptop. Perhaps at work, you found out that one of the star performers from your team is leaving as he faces “leadership issues”. Or the possibility that both happens at the same time and you are about to get dumped at home as well as work and for the same reason.

There is always more to people leaving their jobs than better salaries and benefits. A research establishes that 54% of adults have left their jobs to get rid of their managers. The relationship between a manager and his team majorly influences performance, efficiency and employee retention. However, many leaders struggle to get the relationship dimensions right.

The science of leadership

A study was conducted by Google to find the traits of great bosses. The researchers found eight such shared characteristics including being a good coach, empowering team and showing interest in team member’s achievements and their well-being. It is not just the technical skills that can make one a great leader but also concern, compassion, and support towards the team members.

Another research conducted by O.C Institute found that the key to motivation is recognition. According to the research, 70% of job satisfaction was found among the people who were recognized by their bosses and only 39% feel satisfied without recognition.

It is important to give people positive care, meaningful attention, and support for a healthy relationship at home as well as at work.

Reflect if you recognize your team for their achievements. Formal and informal recognition are both essential. Trophies are something everybody wants, but a simple walk around your team member’s desk to let them know that you have noticed their great work can be helpful.

If you find someone overachieving learn some ways to appreciate them by taking them out for lunch or treat them allowing them to know that you appreciate what they are doing. Get to know them better and making them know you care.

The leaders are the ones who build work cultures where issues don’t spoil the work environment. The leader has to stand as an example. When you notice a particular someone in your team upset, immediately enquire what is wrong. Let them know that you are genuinely committed to resolving the issue.

In case you offended someone on the course apologize to them instantly. When someone approaches you with a trouble be considerate and let them know you appreciate their efforts. Whenever someone comes to you with feedback reply them with thanks. This will make your mind to understand that it doesn’t have to go in the defensive mode but think of solutions to the problem. You cannot expect others to be open to feedbacks if you yourself fail to allow access to criticisms.

The foundation of any type of workplace whether it is a startup, nonprofit or an established corporation is human relationships. People need genuine interest and concern from others. Recognitions are important for all.
