India Runs 266 Fake Universities Followed By 66 Fake Institutions

According to a document tabled in the Lok Sabha by the Minister of State Human Resource Development Satya Pal Singh, there are 277 fake engineering colleges operating in our country with maximum number of these in Delhi. The institutes were running their courses without the approval of All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

The national capital is home to 66 different educational institutes those offer professional courses which are bogus. Telangana and West Bengal are standing next in line with 35 and 27 such institutions.  Karnataka has 23 such fake engineering colleges, followed by Uttar Pradesh which has 22.

The information was presented in the Lok Sabha by Minister of State Human Resource Development Satya Pal Singh while replying to questions by three MPs – P Nagarajan of the Anna India Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), Laxman Giluwa and Rama Devi of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

AICTE is the central body established by an Act of Parliament with a function to grant approval to new technical institutions, the introduction of new courses, etc. We all are aware of the fake certificates that many students and even the seniors carry to get the admissions into graduate programs, postgraduate programs. Once a verification process is initiated then only in-authenticity of such reports is exposed.

In today’s digital age, we all are surrounded by everything fake than the real. Fake news, fake certificates, fake degrees and now fake universities. While this might not appall many of those readers, given the website of the University Grants Commission (UGC) which mentions 22 of these in its official database, what is shocking is the increasing number of such universities.

According to the University Grants Commission Act, 1956 under section 22(1) provides that a degree can be awarded, only by a University established under a central, state/provincial act or an institution deemed to be university under Section 3 of the UGC Act or an institution especially empowered by an Act of Parliament to confer the degree.
